Busting 4 Myths About Dental Implants
August 15, 2019
When it comes to options for replacing missing teeth, dental implants are usually your dentist’s first recommendation. Why? Because they’re truly in a class of their own. They replace not only the crown, but the root of the tooth as well, preserving your oral health for decades to come. However, there are a lot of myths out there about implants. Read on below as your implant dentist dispels 4 of them.
Myth #1: Dental Implants Are Painful
Many people are apprehensive about getting dental implants because they fear the procedure will cause immense pain. In actuality, dental implant placement surgery shouldn’t be painful at all. Your implant dentist will make sure you are nice and numbed up with local anesthesia. They may also offer sedation to make sure you are relaxed. There may be some discomfort associated with the healing process, but your dentist can prescribe medication to help deal with that.
Myth #2: Bridges Are Better Than Implants
Dental bridges are another common method of replacing missing teeth. When you have a bridge, two of the surrounding teeth are shaved down. This can cause more stress and even breakage over time. With dental implants, the neighboring teeth are not affected. Additionally, they replace the root of your tooth, unlike bridges. This prevents bone loss in your jaw that may make your face appear older.
Myth #3: Discount Implants Are Just as Good as Normal Ones
You might think it’s okay to buy bargain implants if you’re on a tight budget. When it comes to dental procedures, though, you pretty much get what you pay for. There’s a reason those implants have been heavily discounted. They are usually made of cheaper, sub-par materials that aren’t as good for your oral health. Your best bet is to invest in traditional implants from a reputable dentist.
Myth #4: Your Dental Implants Will be Noticeable
As long as your implant is placed and restored as it should be, no one will be able to tell it’s not a natural tooth. Your dentist will usually top the implant with a dental crown, or a cap, that can be shaded to precisely match the color of your adjacent teeth. It will seamlessly blend in with the rest of your smile.
Dental implants are not scary, painful, or noticeable like the myths would have you believe. They’re arguably the best method of replacing your missing teeth.
