5 Signs That Indicate You Need a Dental Filling
July 14, 2021
Contrary to popular belief, cavities aren’t just the result of eating too much sugar. Dental accidents, poor oral hygiene, and even just using your teeth to bite down on hard surfaces can all lead to cavities. If left untreated, they can become a serious threat to your oral health. Luckily, there’s an easy solution to prevent further damage and keep your smile safe – dental fillings! Read along as we discuss what they are and learn which common signs indicate you might need one.
What is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is essentially used to fill the parts of your tooth that have been eaten away by decay. It helps treat your cavity and allows your teeth to remain healthy and fully functioning.
Five different types of dental fillings can be used to treat cavities:
- Silver Amalgam Fillings – They’re a popular choice among dentists because they’re strong and cost-effective. However, they are very noticeable.
- Composite Fillings – The material used is much more natural-looking, but it’s not as sturdy or affordable as silver fillings.
- Ceramic Fillings – The fillings combine the best qualities from the previous two. They’re aesthetically pleasing and durable!
- Glass Ionomers (Acrylic Fillings) – These can last up to five years and are a great option for younger patients.
- Gold Fillings – Although these fillings are the least desirable, they can last over two decades with proper dental care.
Signs You Need a Dental Filling
It can be challenging to spot tooth decay as most people don’t show symptoms during the early stages. However, here are some common signs to look out for:
Tooth Sensitivity
Are your teeth sensitive when exposed to hot or cold temperatures, sweet, sticky, and sour foods? It could indicate worn enamel and developing cavities.
Toothache
It’s worth noting that no amount of tooth pain is considered normal, no matter how mild. Constant, sharp, throbbing, or aching pain can indicate a developed cavity.
Dark Spots or Holes
Do you see dark spots or holes in your mouth? Visit your dentist right away as this indicates the cavity is quite large. It will likely require an immediate filling.
Food Gets Stuck Between Your Teeth
If food gets stuck between your teeth every time you eat, it can indicate a small gap or opening that requires a filling to close.
Broken, Cracked, or Lost Filling
Is an existing filling broken, cracked, or lost? Contact your dentist right away to replace before your cavity worsens.
Knowing which signs indicate a cavity can help you seek treatment before the decay progresses. But remember – proper dental care is the key to maintaining a healthy, cavity-free smile!
