7 Toothache Symptoms to Keep an Eye On
December 3, 2020
You usually only go to the dentist for your regular six-month cleanings and checkups, but sometimes things don’t exactly go as expected. If you are experiencing a toothache, this is usually a sign that something isn’t quite right in your mouth and it shouldn’t be ignored. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms or sensations, you should have the issue looked at by your emergency dentist as soon as you can.
Sensitivity
Many people complain of sensitivity in their mouth, but if you have new or worsening sensitivity, it could mean that you have a cavity. This is especially the case if you are particularly sensitive to sugary foods and beverages, or hot and cold temperatures. This is because the enamel is compromised and exposing more sensitive layers of your tooth. It’s best to have this treated right away before you end up needing a more invasive or costly treatment.
Sharp Pain
If your toothache results in sharp pain, or it is becoming worse, this could indicate a cavity or an infected tooth. If you feel pain when you bite down on one or more teeth, this points to a cavity as well. Again, it is important that you have this treated as soon as you can so that you don’t end up with a more severe problem later on.
Bleeding or Swollen Gums
It isn’t uncommon for patients to experience these symptoms now and again, but when they are coupled with a toothache, this likely points to gum disease. If you haven’t done a great job maintaining your oral hygiene, gingivitis can develop. The earlier this issue is acknowledged and treated, the better. When left to progress, you could end up with serious, irreversible symptoms like gum recession, loose teeth, and tooth loss.
Bad Breath or Taste
Having a bad odor or taste in your mouth could mean that you have an abscessed tooth. When a tooth is infected, toxins are admitted and can result in this bad taste and smell. If you have a toothache along with these symptoms, you should see your dentist to have it treated with a root canal or another treatment method.
Loose Teeth
A toothache that leaves you with loose teeth is a sign of late-stage gum disease. This is something that needs to be treated right away. There is a possibility that this symptom could be reversible, and the infection could be eliminated, but immediate treatment is critical if you want to save your teeth!
Discoloration
Some discoloration over time is normal due to drinking things like coffee, wine, and tea, but if you notice one or more teeth in particular change from yellow to brown or gray, this is a sign that the pulp inside your tooth is dead as a result of infection. Another sign of infection includes pus being emitted from the tooth. You will need to have the teeth treated immediately!
Swollen Glands
If you notice swelling around your neck and jaw as well as a toothache, this could mean that an infection is spreading from your mouth to other areas of the body. This is dangerous because it could spread to vital organs and even become life threatening. You should seek medical attention immediately!
If you have tooth pain along with any of the signs above, emergency dental care is crucial to bring your smile back to health. Give your dentist a call so you can get some relief!
