2 Drinks That Help to Prevent Cavities

Have you ever had a cavity? If you have, you know how frustrating they can be to deal with. In addition to needing a dental filling or another treatment, they can be painful if they grow too large. Excellent oral hygiene and healthy eating habits can help to prevent them, but did you know that there are popular beverages that can help as well? How Do Coffee and Green Tea Fight Back Against Cavities?
In some recent studies, evidence has shown that black coffee is active against an organism known as “Streptococcus Mutans.” This is what is responsible for causes the tooth decay that leads to cavities. Roasted coffee also contains antiadhesive properties that prevent this organism and other harmful materials from sticking to the teeth.
Green tea prevents decay through different means. This beverage helps to control bacteria by lowering the acidity in the mouth. It also contains powerful compounds known as “polyphenols.” They have been shown to reduce the number of harmful bacteria in the mouth that cause decay. Loose leave green tea contains a small amount of a natural mineral called “fluoride.” This is known for its tooth strengthening properties.
Both of these beverages contain tannins, so you should know that they can cause staining. In order to prevent this, remember to drink them through a straw and not to sip on them for long periods of time.
What Other Benefits Do These Beverages Have?
In addition to protecting your teeth against decay, coffee and green tea help to:
- Improve Gum Health: Coffee and tea have anti-inflammatory properties that can help prevent gum disease, bone loss, and other inflammation in the mouth. The antioxidants found in green tea, known as catechins, inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause gingivitis and break down gum tissue. Studies have shown that people who drink green tea regularly tend to have healthier gums than those who don’t.
- Prevent Tooth Loss: By reducing periodontal disease and tooth decay, you have a lower probability of losing your teeth.
- Reduce Bad Breath: Green tea has been associated with better smelling breath. It has been shown to outperform both mints and gum when it comes to reducing halitosis.
