Gummy Smile Correction – Wethersfield, CT

Achieve a More Even Gumline

Ideally, no more than a few millimeters of gum tissue should be visible when you smile. If more than that shows, you have what is commonly known as a “gummy smile.” Do you feel self-conscious about this issue? If so, our team is ready to serve you. Via a minimally invasive surgery, we can remove excess gum tissue and help you achieve a more even gumline. Continue reading below to learn more about this cosmetic service, and then contact us when you are ready to request an appointment.

What Is Gummy Smile Correction?

Gummy smile correction may also be known as gum recontouring or gum contouring. It might even be called crown lengthening, though that is technically a slightly different procedure because it involves minor modifications to the jawbone.

During this minimally invasive surgery, we carefully trim the gums, removing excess tissue and evening out the gumline. This makes the teeth appear longer and enhances the overall proportions of the smile.

It is worth noting that this procedure is only appropriate for individuals whose gummy smile is the result of extra gum tissue, not those who have a gummy smile due to an upper lip that retracts too far.

What Happens During & After the Procedure?

During the gummy smile correction procedure, we promote patient comfort by administering plenty of local anesthesia. We may also offer sedation to patients who are nervous or have other challenges that make dental procedures difficult for them.

Once you are settled in, we will carefully trim your gum tissue, being carefully to remove only as much as we need to in order to achieve the desired results. Then, we will send you home so you can start your recovery.

During the weeks after your procedure, you might need to eat a soft diet, be extra-gentle with your oral hygiene, and take other steps to reduce the risk of bleeding, discomfort, and post-operative complications. You are always welcome to call us if you have questions during your recovery period.

Also, please note that gummy smile correction is sometimes performed across multiple appointments. We might have to break it up so you will only be sore in one portion of your mouth at a time.

Benefits of Gummy Smile Correction

Gummy smile correction may benefit you in several ways:

  • Improved appearance. Many patients feel more confident about their appearance after cosmetic dental services, including gummy smile correction.
  • Make way for other services. After gummy smile correction, you may become a candidate for veneers or other aesthetic services.
  • Permanent results. In the vast majority of cases, gum tissue does not grow back after gummy smile correction.
  • Oral health benefits. Overgrown gums can trap food particles and easily become irritated. Gummy smile correction may reduce the risk of such issues.
